Singaporean Literature: To Grandma

 To Grandma

To Grandma or otherwise known as Grandma, was written by Tan Seok Hoon.  In this poem the author himself is telling us about his grandma, wherein the message is for his grandma. In the first line "you plough through your life to bring up your children," which means that his grandmother works so hard just to provide for the family and bring up her children. The line "choose the son you think is filial," which means that his grandmother has a favorite son, but as the poem goes on the persona is telling his grandma that her son will not stay with her forever, thus the children are soon gonna left her as they grow up. The narrator also tells his grandma that as she grows senile, she will be sent in a nursing home, and in the nursing home, the grandma would tell a story about her children. In the last part of the poem, the persona tells his grandma that  he will never forget her.

The themes found in the poem include the love of a mother to her children and also the idea that change is constant. The characters in the poem include the persona, the grandma, and the children. The poem was in a free verse poem.

What I learned from the story is that a mother's love is endless for they are willing to do anything for their children and that they work so hard throughout their life just to provide their children with the basic needs. I also learned that change is always constant, that whatever you love and take care so much does not always stays the same as times goes by. The story also reflects the idea of an ideal grandmother in the Philippines, wherein grandmother always do anything for their child or children and even for their grandchildren, even if they are already old. Other than that, in Philippines, sometimes grandmothers always have this expectation for their children without minding the thought that their expectations does not always happen because their children always have a choice of their own course of life.
