 The Thai Cat

The Thai Cat or otherwise known as My Thai Cat, was written by Pratoomratha Zeng. The Thai Cat is a story that revolves around the story of Siamese cat named, Sii Sward. The story begins with the narrator telling the fascinating features of the Sii Sward. Like having a wonderful fur and a beautiful brown eyes. As the story goes on, the narrator tells us the problem of their village, the Muang village, wherein they are experiencing a water drought. In order to solve this problem, the village need to do a ritual in order for it to rain. Ai Noo, the name of the narrator as what his father called him, Ai Noo's father asked for permission that Sii Sward will be the cat they will used for the ritual. Ai Noo, who is scared for mistakenly thinking that they might kill Sii Sward, refused his father request. His father told him that they will not do anything wrong to Sii Sward and says that their cat was the one chosen by the village because Sii Sward is the cleanest cat in the village. Ai Noo agreed to his father's request and they brought Sii Sward in the temple. People then start the ritual and worshipped Sii Sward, the Rain Queen, despite of the extreme heat of the sun. Since Sii Sward was inside the cage, other people poured a perfume to her and even splashed her with a lot of water. Ai Noo got worried for Sii Sward but his father assured him that everything will fine. People in the village still continue their ritual until they reached Vihara, and prayed to the goddess of rain. Ai Noo took this chance to save his cat and then he returned to their house. Moments later, it started to rain and all the people in the village were happy. Sii Sward ignored the rain and just take the time to rest instead. In the whole year, people in the village visited Sii Sward, giving her treats of fish meats and treating the cat as their heroine.

The themes found in the story include faith, love, and trust. The story was in a first person point of view. The characters include the cat named Sii Sward, the narrator Zeng called Ai Noo by his father, the narrator's father, and the people in the village.

While reading and summarizing the story, I was fascinated by how the story goes. But, I also feel bad for Sii Sward because of the ritual that the people in Muang village did. I could also relate to the feeling of the narrator of how worried he is with Sii Sward when people did something that is not good for the cat, like continuously spraying her with some perfume and splashing water. In addition, I was fascinated with the people in the village for having this strong belief and faith that by doing the ritual and praying to the rain deities,  rain will also come forth to them. I was also touched with Zeng's action for saving his cat because it shows bravery and love. It is bravery in a sense that he took the risk of saving his cat, Sii Sward, and taking it away from danger. It also shows love because Zeng treated Sii Sward like a family even though it was just a cat, but Sii Sward has a big part of Zeng's life.

What I learned from the story is that by having a strong faith and belief to whatever God we are trying to worshipped, good things comes forth to us. That God will always provide us with something that we needed most as long as we believe and have a strong to God. I also learned that loving a pet is a good thing, because once you start to love a pet, you also start treating it as part of your family and will become a big part of you.
