Arabian Literature: Arabian Nights (The Lady and her Five Suitors )

The Lady and Her Five Suitors from the Arabian Nights

The story starts with a merchant man finding out that his wife has an affair with another man, because of this the merchant got into a fight with the man that his wife has an appear with. The lady decided to save her husband, so she wears her finest dress. She and the magistrate, Wali, made a deal that he could visit the house the lady, in exchange for the freedom of her husband. With this, the lady decided to do the same to the other men. She asks a carpenter to create a closet with 5 compartments with locks, then dyes 4 gowns, and prepared a meal for her suitors. Kazi was the first one to arrive at her house, and she let Kazi put on a gown, then she heard a knock on the door and told Kazi that it was her husband so she let Kazi hide in the first compartment of the closet. She opens the door for Wali and did the same thing she does to Kazi, he let him wear a gown and then there is another knock on the door and she let Wali hides in the second compartment of the closet. This also happens to her other suitors, the Vizier and the King. When the carpenter arrived, she told him that the 5th compartment was broken, and the carpenter check it out but was also locked up like the other 4 suitors. The lady then leaves the house and went to her lover where he was imprisoned, she frees him and together they leave the city. The five suitors were locked up in the closet for three days and were freed when the neighbors heard them. When they were out the closet, people saw that four of them were wearing gowns.

Love, trickery and being wise are the themes found in the story. The main characters include the merchant man or the lady's lover, the lady, Kali, Wali, Vizier, the King, and the Carpenter. The neighbors are also the characters foound in the story. The setting was set in the Lady's house. The conflict is man versus man because the Lady tricked the five suitors so her lover would be freed.

The story reflects the reality of most women nowadays, because nowadays some women are willing to sacrifice anything for the man they love, that even sacrificing themselves is also possible.

In the story, I learned that woman are unpredictable because we never know what they are trying to do. In reality, I agree that most women are unpredictable and hard to understand. We also learned that, sometimes other people used to trick others just to get what they want, like for example in politics, some peoples trick others just to get what they wanted. I also learned that we should not only focus on one option but rather we should learn to create and think of other solutions or other strategies to solve our problems.
