Hebrew Literature: The Story of Joseph

 The Story of Joseph

The Story of Joseph is one of the story from the bible that teaches us moral lessons. This is the story about Joseph, the son of Jacob and Rachel. Jacob has twelve siblings, ten of which is his half brother, one sister and one full brother. Of all Jacob's sons, Joseph was his favorite so he gave him a special coat. At age of seventeen, Joseph told his brothers about his dreams, in which his brothers and parents bowed to him, because of this his brothers got angry on him. The half-brothers anger and jealously resulted to them plotting to kill their brother Joseph, but instead of killing him, his brothers sold him to the traders. Then Joseph was sold to Potiphar, one of the Pharaoh's guard and is also a captain. One day, Joseph run away from Potiphar's house because of Mrs. Potiphar and Potiphar's wife accuses Joseph for rape, which leads to Joseph's imprisonment. While being in prison, Joseph shows his talent on interpreting dreams, because of this, he was summoned to interpret the Pharaoh's dreams. Impress by his talent, the Pharaoh appointed him to become a ruler alongside with him. One day, at the time of famine at Canaan, Joseph saw his half-brothers again but they did not recognize him. Joseph tested if his half-brothers regretted what they did, so he told the brothers that the youngest brother should become his slave, but the eldest, Judah, pleaded to allow him be his slave but not their youngest brother. Because of this Joseph realizes that his brothers truly what they did and then he introduce his real identity to them.

Jealousy, rivalry, forgiveness, and love for family are the themes in the story. The main characters in the story include Joseph, Jacob, Rachel, the sister, the ten half-brothers, the youngest brother, Potiphar and his wife, the traders, and the Pharaoh. The conflict is man versus man because Joseph was sold by his ten half-brothers.

The story taught how the value of forgiveness, because in the story, though Joseph's brothers sold him he still forgave them for what they did. Sometimes, we learn to forgive people even if they did something wrong and there are also other times that we forgive our siblings so easily when they did something wrong. Therefore, I would say that forgiveness is innate to us because we know how to forgive people.

In addition, I also learned that we should not allow ourselves to fall into temptation just like what Joseph did. We should learned to resist temptation because temptation can lead to something bad. I also learned the value of loving ones family, because in real life, even though our siblings or some family members made a mistakes we still learned to forgive them, and by this forgiveness we are already showing our love towards them or towards the family. Family is the most important treasure we could get in our life, so we should learned to value the love we have for our family.
