Hebrew Literature: The Story of Ruth

The Story of Ruth

According to The Basilica, The Story of Ruth is a story about redemption. During the time of judges in Bethlehem, and Israelite family, Elimelech and Naomi together with their sons Mahlon and Chilion decided to emigrate in the country of Moab. One day Elimelech died and the sons got married:  Mahlon married Ruth and Chilion married Orpah.

After ten years, Maloh and Chilion died. The death of the two sons leads Naomi to decide to go back to Bethlehem: Naomi told his sons wife to return to their homes, Orpah left but Ruth decided to stay with Naomi. At Bethlehem, Naomi happens to run into a well-known rich guy named Boaz who instantly takes a liking to her and offers her all kinds of sweet privileges. Boaz also happens to be a relative of Naomi's late husband. When Naomi hears about Boaz, she hatches a plan for Ruth to snag him as a husband. Ruth does what her mother-in-law asks. Boaz tells Ruth that he would love to marry her, but said that there's another relative with even closer ties to her in-laws. As it turns out, this random relative is more interested in buying some land that Naomi owns than marrying Ruth. So this other relative announces that Boaz is free to marry Ruth. Boaz and Ruth got married and has a son named Obed. Naomi was so happy because she finally has a bearer of the family name. Obed is surprisingly the grandfather of King David.

Loyalty, family, love, devotion, and redemption are the themes found in the story. The main characters in the story include Naomi, Ruth, Boaz, Obed, Elimelech, Orpah, another relative, Maloh, and Chilion. The setting happens in Bethlehem. The conflict of the story is man versus society because Naomi and Ruth are having trouble living their life because of the society and during their time, woman are just mostly having trouble in their life when they do not have a husband.

In this story I am very pleased with Ruth's character because she is truly loyal to the family of his husband, for she stayed in Naomi's side even though she already lost her husband. I am also fascinated with Naomi's devotion on passing down their family name and her unconditional love for her family, not just to his husband and children but also to her in-laws and relatives.

I also learned from the story that  we should remain to be humble, because we may be bless with a lot of good things today but this things are just temporary sometimes. Learn to be humble and continue to work because this is the only way that we can have a better life.
