Japanese Literature: The Picture Wife

The Picture Wife

This is the story about a man named Gombei. Gombei was just a poor man and is simple minded person. Gombei lives in a hut all alone because no one wants to marry him. One day, a woman came it to his house and notices that Gombei was living alone so she asked if he wants to marry her. Gombei agreed and they get married. Gombei was happy that he already has a wife, but he cannot focus on his work because he was afraid that maybe his wife would leave him. His fear is the reasoned why he keeps coming back into their house. The wife asked a painter to make a painting that looks like her. The wife gave Gombei the painting so that he can look at it every time he misses her. One day, while working at the field, the painting was carried by the wind. He tried to catch it but he wasn't able to do so. He goes back home and tell his wife about it. His wife asked for another painting from the painter. On the other hand, the painting was carried by the wind into the castle; the king saw it and says that if there is a painting, then there is a person. The king then ordered his men to find the woman in the painting. After a long search, the men were able to find her and were forced to take her way from Gombei. They bring her into the castle but before she was taken she told Gombei that he should bring pine trees on New Year. On New Year's Day, Gombei was selling pine trees and his wife saw him. The king saw her smile and he saw that it was the pine seller who made her smile. The king goes to the pine seller and told him to swap clothes with him. While the king was busy selling the pine trees and he moves father and father until his out from the gate. The wife then told the servant to close the gate. The king knocks the gate, asking for someone to open up for him but no one listen to him. The story ends with Gombei and his wife having everything they needed and live a happy life inside the castle.

Love, cleverness, and beauty are the themes found in the story. The main characters are Gombei, the wife, the king, the king’s men, and the servants. The setting was in Gombei's home and in the king's castle. The conflict was man versus man because the wife finds a way to be with Gombei, so she tricked the king.

What I learned from the story is that, even poor and simple minded people can find love in an unexpected way. I also learned that some people are willing to do anything just to be with their loved ones. I also learned that, no one can actually forced love because if you want the love of the person, you need not to force it.
