Japanese Literature: The Spider's Thread

The Spider's Thread by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa

One day Shakyamuni or Gautama Buddha was looking down at hell and saw Kandata. Shakyamuni remembered that Kandata did not kill the spider before when he encountered it in the forest. Shakyamuni then decided to let Kandata comes up in heaven so he sent down a spider thread in hell. Kandata saw the thread and tries to climb up using the thread but when he looked down he saw that the others were also climbing up the thread. With so many people climbing up the thread, the thread brakes and everyone falls back down to hell. Shakyamuni saw all this and was sad but he goes back to doing his things like nothing had happened.

Salvation and hope are the themes found in the story. The characters are Shakyamuni, Kandata, and the other sinners from hell. The conflict was man versus himself because Kandata falls back in hell because of his sins.

What I learned from the story is, sometimes we are given chances in life but these chances are so fragile. Therefore, if we are given the chances, we should grabbed it and we should not looked back on the past events or mistake because it will just going to bring us down. I also learned that doing immoral things have big consequences because it will not only drag you done but it will also destroy you
