Japanese Literature: The Thief Who Became a Disciple

The Thief Who Became a Disciple

The story begins with the thief trying to steal from the Buddhist Monk Shichiri Kojun. The monk knows that the thief was inside his home, instead of stopping the thief, he just told the thief to not disturb him and that the thief could take anything he wants but he told the thief that he should leave something for him because he still has to pay taxes. One day the thief was caught and he confessed what he had done of stealing the From the Shichiri's home. Shichiri was summoned as witnessed but he said that the man they caught is not a thief for he willingly gave the man what he needs and the man even said thanks to him. With this, the thief was released. The thief went back and became the disciple of Shichiri.

The theme in the story is kindness. The characters are Shichiri Kojun and the Thief. The setting happens inside the home of Shichiri. It was written with a third person point of view. The conflict was man versus himself because the thief's conscience was the one who leads him to confess his sins.

What I learned from the story is that, kindness can actually change a man. We should learned to be kind to others because it is a good characteristics that we could possess. I also learned that we should be calm in handling situations, especially the difficult ones.
