African Literature

 Africa by David Diop

Reflection and Lessons Learned

David Diop's poem Africa shows how the life of Africans was before and after colonization. In the first part of the poem, Diop indicated the beauty of Africa before it was colonized, describing African people as proud warriors. In the latter of the poem, Diop indicated what life was like for African people when they are being oppressed by their colonizers. Indicating the idea of what Africa was like during and after colonization, and also giving a message to the Africans, shows how much Diop love his native land. Upon reading the poem, I realized that Diop was giving the poem as a message to the African people, wherein he indicated in the last part of the poem that only through unity and love  can the African people claim their freedom from their colonizers. In the poem, the experiences of the Africans from their colonizers and how they fought for their freedom, is parallel to what other countries also experienced when they were colonized. For example, Philippines had been colonized for many years by Spain, Japan, and America, the Filipino people's unity and love for the country, is one of the main reasons why they were able to get their freedom as they fought against their colonizers. In this poem, Diop's message to Africa  and perhaps, to the readers, gives me the learning on what life is like for the people who are being colonized. I also learned that through unity and love for one's country, we can get the freedom and also preserved the peace of our country because the destiny of our country is in our hands.
