Singaporean Literature

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew

SUMMARY

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is a graphic novel written by Sonny Liew. The story talks about an old man Charlie Chan Hock Chye who also tells a story about his life during his younger years. The novel then tells the story of Charlie Chan Hock Chye's works which include a comic book entitled "Ah Huat's Giant Robot" a robot that only understand Chinese, an allegory that talks about aliens, a parody of Spiderman entitled "Roachman," and many more. The story ends explaining how Chan's works received and award and how it impacts Singaporean literature.

LESSONS LEARNED AND REFLECTION

This literary piece somehow reflects the author himself because in this novel, he did not do it in the traditional way, wherein the story is all just written in text. This novel shows different graphics to help readers understand the story even better. With the different graphics of the novel, it shows that Sonny Liew is an artist. In this story, I learned that people who spend their time working for throughout their life and doing what they love is a good thing because what comes around goes around. In the story, when Charlie Chan Hock Chye tells a story about his younger years, how much he work, and the literary works he did throughout his life, actually paid off because even if he is already old, people still recognized him as a good artist and literary writer. I also learned that in the story, it reflects the history of Singapore, which is fascinating because instead of just reading them in a text, readers get to see the visual image of it through the graphics made by Sonny Liew.
