Lebanese Literature: The Sayings of the Brook

The Sayings of the Brook

According to the report in our class, The Sayings of the Brook is one of the poetry inside the book of Kahlil Gibran entitled A Third Treasury.

What I understood in the poem is that in the first stanza, Gibran is telling us the sayings of the brook or it could be the sayings of life. He explained that life is about having the desire and determination to live; through this we can think that man has to have the willingness to live their life. Then, there is wisdom which he explained that it is words that has meanings, which is indeed true, because wisdom is not only about words or knowledge but it is about having meaning into one's words. Then in the last two lines of the first stanza, he talks about greatness through which he explained that greatness is for the people who refuse position, here we can think that a man's greatness is not about the position they get or have but it is to his greatness comes within himself.

Second stanza explains that not all men are nobles because of their ancestors for there were some of the nobles who were descendants of murderers. Third stanza explains that a chain is better than a necklace because not everyone who are chained up is subdued or depress, which is indeed true because for me, if I based it on reality, people who are chained up maybe causing trouble so they were chained to control their wrongdoings.

Fourth stanza explains that having a pure heart is like paradise. Next stanza explains that hell is about having an empty heart not torture. Next stanza explains that, riches is not all about money. Next stanza explains that, not all poor people are worthless which I totally agreed because for me, all men are poor it is just that rich people are just poor people  with some money on their pockets. Then, it also explains that beauty is a light in the heart not the face. The next one explains that, perfection is not about having a pure soul because some virtue involves sin. In the last stanza he said that what the brook is saying is the secrets of the sea, which I think, sea here represents life itself.

I think the theme of this poem is about life itself, or the truth and secrets about life. I also observed that, in this poem, Gibran uses a free verse poem but there are repetitions as well in the first words of some of the lines, he also made used of simile and also symbolism.

The message of the poem helps me learned how I should perceived life or how we should perceived life. In the first stanza, I learned that we should have the willingness to live because that is life, we should be aware of the words that we or other people used because it is where wisdom comes from, and we should be great of who we are because that is what greatness is, we do not need any position just to prove ourselves as a great person. In the second stanza I learned that not everyone who came from a noble family or has a bloodline of a noble family is a noble because nobility is not about the ancestry of a person, nobility comes from a person's hard work itself. I learned in the third stanza that  chain is better than a necklace because not everyone who are chained up is subdued or depress, which is indeed true because for me, if I based it on reality, people who are chained up maybe causing trouble so they were chained to control their wrongdoings. In the fourth and fifth stanza, I learned about what paradise and what hell is, wherein paradise is about having a pure heart and hell is about having an empty heart because if you have pure heart you bring peace to yourself which is like paradise, while if you have an empty heart that means it is like hell because you do not have any emotions on things. In the sixth stanza, I learned that riches are not based on money alone because some riches are about happiness, family, and good emotions. Then in the next stanza, I realized that not all poor people are worthless which I totally agreed because for me, all men are poor, it is just that rich people are just poor people  with some money on their pockets. I also learned about beauty, that beauty is can be found within and not on the physical appearance of a person. And in the last part I learned that, what the brook is saying are the secrets of life, because all these truths are sometimes applied and seen in reality.
